Abstract:
Abstract: Various aspects of farming and agriculture are depicted in this handbook of 272 charts developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Categories of charts include 1) the farm, 2) population and rural development, 3) the consumer, 4) food and nutrition, 5) U.S. trade and world production, and 6) commodity trends. Farming charts provide information on the farm population, farmworkers, income, assets and finance, prices, inputs, outputs and conservation, land tenure, and farmer cooperatives. Consumer charts highlight economic indicators, housing, mortgages, consumer prices, food marketing costs, food consumption, diet quality, family economics, the elderly, and medical care. Food and nutrition charts show USDA costs for food assistance programs and factors influencing participation in the food stamp program, WIC and child nutrition programs, the nutrition program for the elderly, and the school lunch and breakfast programs. Commodity trends are presented for livestock and dairy products, wheat, rice and other grains, vegetables, fruits, and tobacco.
