- Describes the structure and function of the WIC program and provides an overview of the task of the Committee on Scientific Evaluation of WIC Nutrition Risk Criteria. Reviews linkages between low income and risk of inadequate nutrition; discusses the principles of nutrition risk assessment that guided the Committee in conducting its review and provides the framework used to develop the Committee's recommendations; covers the nutrition risk criteria used by the WIC program (anthropometric, biochemical and medical, dietary, and predisposing risks); and provides conclusions and recommendations regarding nutrition risk criteria and recommendations for research and action.
