Abstract:
Prepared in response to the Congressional mandate for a study of "appropriate methods of drug abuse education instruction" for use in the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). This report reviews the Congressional mandate and gives an overview of WIC. Discusses the prevalence and consequences of drug abuse among pregnant women; effective approaches to drug abuse prevention; approaches to screening and referral; and gives recommendations for the provision of drug abuse information and referral in WIC.
